New Etsy Shop Name!

Ok guys I could not wait to reveal the new name of my etsy shop!!! Like I said in my last post the name that I had wasn’t my favorite. I’ve always wanted something prettier and of course a name that meant something to me.

It’s been nearly a year since moving and while there has been some stressful times, it has been amazing getting to do every day life with my sister. I love the fact that for the first time in many years, me and my siblings get to see each other whenever we want. It’s been such a blessing!

So a while ago at my sister’s house we were watching a home design show and we were talking about how it would be fun if her and her husband and me and my husband could buy a piece of land together and then build two houses on it and then start a farm! I was talking about the different animals we could have and I mentioned having sheep and alpacas and then we could learn how to sheer them properly and make our own yarn and start a company! I came up with a name that we could use with it ending in “Farms”. Totally fun, right?! Well fast-forward to the other day when I was feeling like my shop needed a change, my sister was over and we got to talking and I was telling her a couple of names of other shops that I thought were cute and how I wanted to have a better name. So we sat here trying to think of different name using some of my favorite flowers and nothing was really sounding very good. I was starting to get frustrated and then my sister asked me what was the name I said we could call our farm! OMG!!! Genius! Only I didn’t want to use farm since I don’t have a farm!

So thinking further on it, it started to all come together. I love the time I have been able to get back with my siblings. Me and my sister always talked about doing ever day life together and how just how much sweeter life is now that we are all together. So if you haven’t put it together just yet the new name of my shop is……!!!!!!

SS+T Logo v3

I wanted the name to represent my relationship with my sweet sisters (and my brother! we are his sweet sisters lol). What I have learned from my relationships is that no matter what life brings you, the ups, the downs, the little stupid arguments, the big arguments, bringing new life into the family, or saying a final good-bye to a loved one, at the end of the day, your siblings are the ones that you can lean on the most. The ones that are going to understand you better than you probably understand yourself. They are the ones that are going to be the most honest with you and that you can put your trust into. I love you guys so much!! (even if they don’t read this. lol)

Anyways, there it is! I hope you all like it! I want to give my husband a huge shout out for helping me design my logo! He has a graphic design business that he does on the side so if you are interested in creating something fun he can do pretty much anything! His company is “InHouse Graphics”. He does have an instagram page but if you have any questions just leave it in the comments down below and I will let him know!

Thanks again for taking the time to read my new post!

p.s we will clean up the picture a little more before sending it in to get business cards made, I was just excited about sharing the new logo and name before we could finalize the details.

New Shop Changes

Hey guys!

As you can tell from the title new changes are coming to my etsy shop!! I have been thinking up some new ideas and wanted to share that is why I haven’t been very active on here or others forms of social media.

I have been wanting to change some things about my etsy shop for a while but wasn’t sure what exactly I wanted to change. I thought of some new items to make that might sell and have added items that I made a while ago hoping that might spark some new followers and make some sells, but that didn’t really work. I’ve been feeling like my shop is at a stand still for a while…a long while.

Lately I’ve just been doing some searching on Instagram and have seen all these successful shops and seen all the different things they make and sell and have thought, “Well I could make something like that. Why are they able to sell theirs but I can’t sell mine?” Don’t get me wrong, I love knitting and crocheting just for the fun of it, but sometimes it wouldn’t hurt to sell items to help out with the bills or just to earn money to support my hobby.

The one thing I noticed a lot about these successful shops are the names! I’ve always been kind of iffy about my shop name. I wanted to create something that was catchy and toyed around with different things but in the end I went with something plain and simple. So I’ve never been too thrilled about it.

So the biggest change coming to my shop is going to be the name! I will do another post on how I came up with the name and the meaning and inspiration behind it. But for now I just wanted to give my little community of followers and supporters a heads up on some changes and what to look out for.

In addition to a name change, I’m thinking of making some new blankets, ear warmers/headband (even though we are heading into some warmer weather) maybe some baby items….we will see. I love all things “rustic” and “farmhouse” so I am hoping to pull some inspiration from those types of things.

As always, thank you for stopping by and taking the time to read my little blog! I hope you all have a wonderful day!!

One Skein Textured Infinity Scarf

Hi guys!

I have been thinking about creating a pattern for some time now but have been kind of scared to since I’ve never done it before. I knew that I wanted to create something simple and easy enough for a beginner. I’m pretty sure there are plenty of other patterns out there like this one or even easier ones but I just thought this one would be fun. It has a lot of texture and is a good length. You can wear it long or wrapped around your neck once to create a cowl style scarf. I did have my mom test this pattern since she’s an amazing knitter and maker in general. We found that this pattern is super versatile and is super easy to change up. So huge shout out to my mom. Please check out her etsy store (as well as mine. Just click the “SHOP” link) here.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • One skein of 328 yrds medium worsted weight yarn
  • Straight knitting needles US size 8 (5mm)
  • Yarn needle for joining and weaving in ends
  • Scissors

Abbreviations:

  • St = stitches
  • K1, P1 = Knit One, Pearl One

Pattern:

  • Cast on 35 stitches
  • K1, P1 for 10 rows working in a “ribbed” pattern. So, when you turn your work and it looks like the first st is K1 then K1, if it looks like a P1, then P1. That’s how I did it.
  • Knit next 10 rows
  • Continue to alternate every 10 rows until almost whole skein is used, leaving a long tail for joining ends to create an infinity scarf.
  • Once desired length is reached, cast off as normal and tie off
  • If you have a little tail in the beginning of work, weave in to hide.
  • Fold your work in half, matching the ends together and with your yarn needle attached to the long tail, sew the ends together by weaving the long tail through several stitches, starting at one end weaving back and forth to the other end.
  • Tie a knot and weave back through a couple of stitches to hide the tail and trim off excess yarn if still long.

Here are a couple of notes:

  1. I ended my scarf with 10 rows of knit so that when joined, the pattern is consistent. That did leave me with enough yarn to do another 10 rows of K1, P1 but not enough to leave a long tail after that. So for me, and my comfort zone, I make sure I have enough for a 8-12″ long tail. That might be too much but I’d rather know I have plenty for joining rather than find out I don’t have enough.
  2. Edges will be wavy. Don’t freak out if you find that your edges are wavy this happens because of alternating the 2 different stitches without creating a border or frame. I think it gave it a little added texture and turned out pretty cute.
  3. If you are just learning to knit I linked a couple of youtube videos of how to cast on, and how to bind off. I really like these videos the best. They are easy to follow!

That’s it! It looks like a lot of steps but it really is easy, I promise! Here is how mine turned out:

If you decide to make this scarf be sure to post a picture of how it turned out and let me know if you found it easy. If you have any questions feel free to ask in the comment section. Don’t forget to check out mine and my mom’s etsy shops and favorite them so you will be up to date on what we have created. You can also follow me on instagram to see what I am currently working on. Thanks!

Yarn Storage

Hey there!

Lately I’ve been seeing people showing their yarn collection/storage and I thought I’d share mine as well. It may give you an idea on how to store your yarn or inspire you to try new colors. While I don’t have one of those super organized or “pretty” storage units or whatever you want to call it, I have added a few new baskets. I really like the whole “farm house” and rustic styles so that’s what I was trying to go for. It might change in the future, depending on what we decide to do with our second bedroom, but for now it works and keeps thing tidy.

So we originally got this to use in our kitchen as a pantry and storage for cutting boards, cook books, blenders, our food processor but since we moved, we have plenty of pantry space and I didn’t want to get rid of it.

I can’t remember exactly what it’s called but I know we added all of the doors on it. It have four little feet on it to keep it up off of the floor as well. But Ikea has a lot of nice storage options. The other one I was looking at was the HEMNES unit. I love that designer. Our dresser and nightstands are HEMNES too. (click this picture to go to Ikea’s website)

20170306_104406

I just love it. It’s not too tall or bulky or heavy. It made a good little pantry/kitchen storage but now it’s perfect for storing all of my yarn and everything I need to create.

20170306_104313

On the top shelf I have two baskets. One wire one with different colored balls of yarn, and then a distressed crate that has a few finished items in it. ( currently in my etsy store, just click the “SHOP” link!) On the second shelf I have a couple of berry baskets I got from a local farm when I bought some fresh berries, that hold buttons and a measuring tape and a few other small items that I sometimes attach to my finished products. I also have a bamboo yarn bowl, another wire basket that has a few small items such as compression gloves and patterns and then my large knitting needles. On the bottom shelf is two baskets. One with more balls of yarn and yet another wire basket that has most of my knitting needles and crochet hooks.

20170306_104344

This is the bottom part of the storage unit. The top shelf has some random unorganized things. All of my knitting looms some yarn still in a bag that I haven’t figured out what I want to make with. A notebook with a lot of written patterns and a mesh bag (lingerie bag) that I will use to wash the yarn either before I start using it or after I’ve made something. This is the best way to wash your delicate items so they last longer if you don’t want to hand wash them. The second shelf is all yarn! Most of the yarn was given to me. Lastly, on the bottom shelf is another basket of balls of yarn. The basket was my nana’s and I wanted to use it in a more gentle way so I decided to put more yarn in it. Next to that is a bag of polyfill that I have used to stuff my little crochet monsters that I made for my nephew’s birthday one year. Then there is a small bag of random yarn.

I do have another rubbermaid container that has more balls of yarn and some unfinished projects in, but it’s nothing fancy and far from pretty. Do you have a “yarn stash”? Feel free to show me, I’d love to see other collections and storage options. You can leave a comment down below or tag me on instagram @kristyshomemade and don’t forget to follow me too. Also, if you are interested in any of my items I’m selling go ahead and click the “SHOP” link up top and it will take you to my etsy store. Thanks!

New Things To Come

Hey everyone!!

It’s been about a good year since I’ve done anything with this blog. Lots have happened since I last wrote and if you are interested I can do a blog post about everything. BUT! I have been thinking a lot about where I want this blog to go and what I want it to be about. I started this with wanting it to be about several things. I have lots of interests and ideas and tips but I was finding it a little difficult to write about them all.

So while I am still passionate about the things I have written about on here I am thinking about changing things up a bit and trying to stick with only one thing. Maybe from time to time writing about other things as they come along but really only sticking to one thing.

I have had my etsy shop for some time now and it hasn’t really gone anywhere since I’ve started it so I am really thinking and praying about whether or not I should just focus all my attention to growing my business. I really love to create and lately I have been finding myself making more and doing more with that hobby instead of doing beauty related things. I still totally love all things makeup of course and will talk about whats new and exciting sometimes but I feel like my attention has totally been focused on making things.

I know I don’t have a huge following on here but I would love to share more of what I make and how to make things. I have shared a little bit and have shared my etsy store on here in the past (just click the SHOP link) but I think it’s time for a bit of a change and redirection.

Anyway! That’s my thought as of now. If you have any input or advice for me please leave a comment and if you’d like to know about what has been going on this past year let me know! As always thank you for taking the time to read my blog!!

My “Go-To” Makeup Look

Hey guys.

Today’s post is going to be on the makeup look I did a couple weeks ago. This is my “go to” look, especially when I am in a hurry or we make last minute plans.

20160227_155405

As you can see, I didn’t want anything that was going to feel too heavy on my face. So the first thing I did was prime (sorry I forgot to add a pic). What I have been using for a primer is the Nivea men’s aftershave balm. I’m sure you’ve all heard how great of a primer it is and it’s so affordable. I get the one for sensitive skin mostly because the scent isn’t as strong and after it soaks into your skin you don’t even smell it anymore. I feel like it really makes your makeup last.

I have oily/combo skin and before I discovered the aftershave, the Benefit Cosmetics Bigger Than BB Big Easy BB Creme (or whatever this stuff is) used to clump up in my dry areas and then slide off in my oily areas. I didn’t use it for a long time so I thought I’d give it another try using the aftershave and it actually lasted. I didn’t clump up or slide off at all. It was amazing! The shade I got is in “Light”

Next, I used the Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Dark Circle Eraser in the lightest shade available to me.

After that I set my face with the NYX Stay Matte But Not Flat Powder Foundation. I usually always do this no matter what I am using just because I like the extra coverage. This has been my go to product to set my face for the last couple of years. I really like it and it’s more affordable than other similar high end products out there.

Then to set my under eye area, I use the Anastasia Of Beverly Hills Contour Kit the light to medium palette. They have a medium to tan palette that looks beautiful as well. I used the shade Banana, which is a yellow shade, to set my under eye area but sometimes I will use both Banana and Vanilla (vanilla is the more pink shade). I also used this palette for my bronzing and contouring. When I contour, I usually just do a light contour. I have to practice my heavy contour before posting anything about that. Haha The shades I use the most in this palette for that are Fawn (is kind of an ashy brown) and Java (to me I feel like this is more of a neutral brown) and then the last colors in the palette, in case you were wondering, are Sand ( a pinky toned highlight) and Havana ( which is like a red based brown)

For blush, I used the Morphe Brushes Blush palette. It’s call 9b. I love this palette! I just wish this palette had names or numbers for the colors. I used the first shade in the second row. All the shades are so pretty and easy to blend and pigmented! If your looking for a blush palette I highly recommend this one!

20160227_155739

Next is brows, eyes, and lips. Like I said I just went with something simple and just an “everyday” look. So for my eyebrows I just used the Chella Eyebrow Color in the shade Tantalizing Taupe and then set them with the ELF Eyebrow and Eyelash Gel.

Then, again sorry not pictured, I used the Urban Decay Primer Potion to prime my eyelids. I used the three eye shadow palette from NYX. I got it in an ipsy bag one month so I’m not sure if this is something that is available to buy or something that was just made for ipsy. All my stuff is packed away right now so I’m not sure what the shades are called.

First I used the lightest shade all over my lid. I didn’t blend it up past my crease, I just kept it low on the lid. Then, I used that middle shade on a fluffy brush and blended that in my crease, starting on the outer corner of the eye so that most of the product sits there and then gets blended into the inner corner of the eye. I didn’t use the black shade this time but I did use the eye shadow pigment we got in our ipsy bag last month from Naked Cosmetics. I just kept that on the outer corner of the eye and blended down just a little bit and then a little into the crease, so in that outer “V” area.

Then I just applied the Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara. I didn’t curl my lashes this time. I kind of feel like I don’t really need to with this mascara. It gives me the length and volume that I am looking for.

So for probably my favorite part of doing my makeup, is the highlight. I almost always, since getting it, reach for the BECCA Cosmetics highlight that Jaclyn Hill created called “Champagne Pop”. I absolutely love this highlight and a little goes a long way so you don’t need much. I find that I just want to keep applying it even when I don’t need any more. I love it so much!!!!

I never really know what to do for my lips because I just feel like not matter what I do, they are just so little. Especially that upper lip. It kind of drives me crazy. So I never really do anything other that some sort of version of a nude/pink lip. So I used the NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Rikugien. Then I just topped it off with a sheer pink gloss from NYX.

This is how it turned out.

That’s it! That’s pretty much my go to makeup. I hope you enjoyed this long post! Be sure to subscribe and share with your friends. Thanks.

P.S.- Leave a comment down below and tell me if you want to see a makeup collection (broken down into categories), what I use to do my hair, or like a perfume/body spray collection? Let me know. Thanks.

Life Update: Moving!!

Hey everyone.

I just wanted to give a little life update and as you can see by the title…

WE’RE MOVING!!!

There is a long story of how this all came to be and I’ve been sitting here typing it all out and as I was reading back what I wrote, I just felt like it was super long and kind of boring. There has been a lot of emotions rolling around and I was going to put that all in here but thought maybe some of you wouldn’t really want to be bothered by all of that. So, to keep it short, me and Kyle have been praying a lot about this move and I can honestly say that this is a total God thing. Moving to be closer to my family has been something I have dreamed about for years. I’ve lived away from my brother sister practically my whole life and as we have gotten older, we have only grown closer so it has become quite hard to say good-bye to them and my nephews and everyone else.

Not to say that it is going to be easy to say good-bye to Kyle’s family or the two nephews I have down here because that is going to be way hard. For nearly the last 3-4 years, they are who I have depended on and have leaned on, being that the family I lived with or near had to move or we had to move and made it more difficult to spend time with. So, it’s going to be really hard to say bye to them. I am so thankful for the relationships that have been made stronger because of the life events that have happened. I don’t feel like Kyle’s family are just my in-laws, they are truly my family and I love them so much!!

So for those of you that don’t know, we are moving to Oregon. We try to make yearly trips, even if it’s only once a year and we will be trying to do the same to come back to California. We first planned on trying to start our own store up there but sometimes God throws something in your lap that you just have to try. So that is what sort of happened. Kyle worked really hard on his business plan and had things printed out to show a couple of investors and then a job opportunity fell into his lap and we talked about it and felt like it wasn’t going to hurt to try for it. So if he gets it, that will be amazing and a huge relief for our financial stability and if it doesn’t work out then that is okay too. We will continue to try to open our store and of coarse in either situation be praying and asking for guidance. If he does end up getting the job then that will give us a little extra time to put more thought and plan into our store because that is still something we both really want to try to do. It would be awesome for extra income eventually.

The move went from maybe in like 2 years or more, to this year! It’s been crazy how much God has shown us. Everything has been falling into place for the move to happen as soon as it is. It’s funny because last May was the first time we felt like God was telling us that it was going to happen. It wasn’t an “if” anymore, it was a “when” that was the question. The when became maybe September/October of this year to maybe the end of August to April then finally it’s going to happen in May. It’s amazing what you will begin to see when you pray about something and you tell God “I trust you”. Which is exactly what we have been doing and continue to try to do. Sometimes it’s a struggle to let go and trust God but once you are able to it’s so amazing what God shows you.

So lately I’ve just been getting things that we aren’t using that much packed up and going through things and trying to get rid of stuff or donate stuff. It’s kind of hard trying to decide what you will pack up this far ahead of time. I’ve got our bookcases packed and even though I don’t read a whole lot, I’ve been finding that I am in the mood to read. It’s funny how things like that happen. I’ve even got all of my nail polish stuff packed up along with most of my makeup. I left enough out so that if I do need to put makeup on I will have what I need but as far as my collection goes, it’s all packed up! It was so hard deciding what I want to have left out.

So with that said, I do have pics of the last time I did my makeup that I plan on posting on here. I’m just trying to figure out what to call it. I feel like it pretty much looks like my “go to” look since it’s brown eye shadows and nothing crazy. So we will see.

That’s pretty much it for now. Once we are getting closer to the big move I might do another post about it or something. Life is crazy with all the ups and downs and if there is something you are struggling with, the best advise I can give is to pray and keep praying about it. Tell yourself and God that you trust Him. Ask for God to open and close doors and to give you peace about something if the answer is no. God’s plan for you is much better than the plan you have for yourself.

Thank you so much for stopping by!!

XOXO
